An analysis completed by Argonne National Laboratory found that greenhouse gas emissions, for 100% biodiesel (B100), are 74% lower than those from petroleum diesel.
  • As a leading renewable energy resource, biodiesel comes from a naturally occurring biomass sources that can be replenished after use. Biodiesel is sustainably produced from a variety of renewable resources and by‐products of food production for humans and animals.
  • Biodiesel is non-toxic, non-flammable and biodegradable. It is essentially free of sulfur and other harmful compounds currently found in petroleum based diesel production. Comprehensive studies have shown that biodiesel biodegrades as fast as sugar and is less toxic than table salt.
  • All engines that currently run on diesel can use biodiesel without the need for expensive modifications or the need for new equipment. Biodiesel has chemical properties that make it similar to conventional diesel,  yet biodiesel does not require any engine modifications or equipment to use as a blended fuel or substitute for conventional diesel.
  • Biodiesel can be used alone or it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a biodiesel blend. Biodiesel blends can also be used as heating oil.  Local creation of biodiesel reduces dependence on foreign oil and production.
  • Blends of biodiesel and conventional petroleum diesel are products most commonly distributed for retail consumption.
    • B100 is 100% biodiesel fuel.
    • B20 is a 20% biodiesel blend.
    • B5 contains 5% biodiesel.
